2015 Summer Literacy Adventure
Florida’s First Lady Ann Scott and the Florida Department of Education have partnered with the Florida Lottery and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to announce the 2015 Summer Literacy Adventure. As summer is fast approaching, we encourage schools, students and parents to prepare for the summer break by participating in this fun challenge designed to help our state’s students maintain and improve their reading skills throughout the summer months. Reading is a critical component of the learning process and it is important that students and their families make reading a part of their daily routines even when school is not in session.

To make reading even more exciting, we are challenging all of our state’s students to pledge to read as many books as possible throughout the summer break and I hope that you will encourage all of the teachers, students and parents in your school to participate. Each student can fill out his or her pledge on the Just Read, Florida! website at Summer Literacy Pledge.

Following the summer break, the department will recognize the top 10 schools with the highest percentage of participation. The school whose students read the most books will receive a surprise visit from First Lady Ann Scott.

Naegleria fowleri ameba

The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County is reminding the community of the risk of Naegleria fowleri  ameba when swimming or diving in freshwater bodies. Primary amebic encephalitis (PAM) is an infection of the brain caused by Naegleria fowleri ameba. Florida has the second highest incidence of PAM in the U.S., after Texas. PAM infection occurs when the ameba enters through the nose causing meningitis. Almost all PAM cases are fatal. The majority of infections with Naegleria fowleri occur following swimming or diving in freshwater lakes, rivers or hot springs, or thermally heated bodies of water. Infection may also occur when contaminated water from other sources (such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated tap water <47°C) enters the nose, for example when people submerge their heads or cleanse during religious practices, and when people irrigate their sinuses. Attached you will find an informational flyer from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with information on the Naegleria fowleri ameba and methods that may help to reduce the risk of infection, as well as a flyer of Jordan Smelski’s story, a 5th grade graduate at Wilson Elementary School who contracted the ameba last year.  For additional information on this ameba, please contact the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County at (407) 665-3266.

Welcome Incoming 6th Graders to LCMS

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 6TH GRADERS:  The Florida Department of Health and the Department of Education require all students entering 7th grade to have a Tdap booster (adult strength tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis).  An updated Florida Certification of Immunization DH 680 Form must be presented to the school before your child can receive a schedule or enter school on August 17, 2015, the first day of classes for the 2015-16 school year.
