LCMS Scheduling FAQs

🐾AT THIS TIME - WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT CHANGES IF THERE IS AN ERROR IN A SCHEDULE - FOR EXAMPLE: HAS A BLANK PERIOD, TWO PE CLASSES IN A SEMESTER, OR MISSING A CORE SUBJECT.  

🐾My child has PE – they had it last year – why?
The state of Florida requires all middle school students to take a semester of PE each year in middle school. If your child is in a sport that requires 25+ hours/week of activity, you can waive this requirement. The waiver can be found on the school website and must be accompanied by a letter from the coach documenting the number of hours per week. The waiver can be found on the Parents page of the LCMS website:  www.lcms.k12.fl.us 

🐾My child is in LEAP Learning Pathways  but he or she did not request it. Why?
SCPS requires all students to take the LEAP course (9100110 OR CAR&TEC OCCS & CP)  in middle school. This course is a state requirement. No, there is not a waiver for this course. There are more 6th graders than there are seats in this course. If your student does not get placed in it this year, they will take it next year. 

🐾What are the different levels of math courses offered? 
With new BEST Standards came a realignment of our math courses.  Please refer to the curriculum guide for more information
6th grade - Standard & Accelerated
6th grade - Accelerated Math grade 7 Accelerated (Known as RAMP 6)
7th grade - Standard & Accelerated
8th grade - PreAlgebra (level 1s & 2s only), Algebra 1, Geometry
Why would my student be placed in an Advanced or Accelerated course if we didn’t select it?  
Student placement is based on state and district assessments, grades, and/or teacher recommendations. Students who score levels 3, 4 or 5 should take Advanced/Accelerated/Algebra 1. Standard courses provide additional scaffolding for those who are not proficient and are more appropriate for those scoring a level 1 or 2. (This is true for all content areas, not just Math). It is always better to start in the higher level course first. Students generally do better than they think they will.

🐾Why would my student be assigned to a Virtual Lab course on campus?
Utilizing SCVS & FLVS allows us to offer additional elective courses that we would not normally be able to offer. For example, students who are placed in Virtual Lab often take Business Keyboarding (typing), Creative Photography, Peer Counseling, and others. Eighth graders can take the High School Personal Fitness required course. Students who are within 6 months of 15 years old can take Driver’s Education. 

🐾I don’t know what a course is that is on my student’s schedule. Where can I find out more information? Please review the Curriculum Guide for more information. The Curriculum Guide can be found on the Parents page of the LCMS Website: www.lcms.scps.k12.fl.us 

🐾My student chose Art 2D as their first choice. Why didn’t he get it?
We only have 1 Art teacher. Ms. Dean teaches 3 sections of Art 2D & 3 sections of Art 3D each semester - both have 35 seats. That means that only 105 students can take Art 2D and 105 students can take Art 3D, each semester.

🐾Who decides which electives my student is placed in?
Your student - or you - entered your course requests in the Google form. The counselors entered those requests into Skyward. The Skyward algorithm places students into classes - with 8th graders getting placed first.
Keep in mind, however, that not every class is available every class period. For example, Art 2D is only 3 periods a day. Even if it was your child’s 1st choice, it might not fit in their schedule for those 3 periods. Once all of the requests are attempted, students are then placed in any available elective. Remember - academics get priority over electives when courses are placed on their schedule. 

🐾Please be aware that there are more 6th graders than seats in Think: AgriScience. As many students as possible will be placed in this course. 

🐾I submitted my request to the Google form, now what?
Please wait patiently! 😊 You will be notified by the school counselor if we are able to make the schedule change for you.

🐾When can students arrive on campus?
The doors will open at 9 am. The first bell will ring at 9:25 am.

🐾How do I know which lunch my student has?
We will tell students their lunches on the first day of school. 

🐾How do I know what bus my student has?
Download the MyRideK12 app. Routes will be dropped 8/5
